What is a prong snap?

Unlike a spring or ring snap that uses a hollow post, a prong snap has five little triangular teeth that pierce straight through the fabric and lock into a ring on the other side. Two things make this style special:

  • Very low profile: it sits almost flush, which is ideal for baby clothes meant for layering and for spots like a bodysuit inseam where snaps sit close together.
  • No pre-punched hole needed: the prongs pierce the fabric themselves, so setting is quick.

Because the teeth grip directly, prong snaps are best on light to mid-weight fabrics. On very thin knits, add a little fusible interfacing behind the snap so it does not pull through — a tip that saves a lot of ruined projects.

Open, capped or pearl: which prong snap style?

All three use the same prong mechanism — the difference is the look of the top:

  • Open ring (open prong): the classic exposed-ring finish. Practical, low-profile, and the most economical — perfect for cloth nappies, bibs and everyday baby wear.
  • Capped prong: a smooth metal cap covers the top for a neater, more finished appearance. A nice step up for babywear and shirts where the snap is visible.
  • Pearl capped prong: a decorative pearl-look top — the signature of western shirts and vintage-style garments. Functional and decorative at once.

Don't have a press yet?

These dies need a hand press machine to set the snaps cleanly and consistently. All dies use a 6.3 mm (1/4 inch) top screw thread and an 11.9 mm (1/2 inch) bottom diameter, so they fit our hand press. Check those measurements if you own another brand.
